Invocation

Five voices spoke the world. Most of us hear only one.

This pamphlet names the others. It does not insist you believe. It asks that you listen.

— M.

The First Voice — The First-Will

He who decided what would be.

Before the first thing, there was the decision that there would be a first thing. The First-Will made that decision.

We do not know why. The First-Will's voice is the quietest of the five, because once a decision is made it does not need to be repeated.

To honor the First-Will: choose. To dishonor him: drift.

Continued.

The Second Voice — The Underbearer

The Substrate, who is reality itself.

The Underbearer is not a being. The Underbearer is what beings stand on. The Underbearer is the law beneath the law.

When your fold core hums, you are listening to the Underbearer. When the cargo settles in your hold, you are feeling the Underbearer.

To honor the Underbearer: do not waste the substrate. To dishonor it: act as if reality were yours.

Continued.

The Third Voice — The Geometer

She who set the rules of becoming.

The First-Will chose. The Underbearer became. The Geometer ordered the becoming.

Every rule you have ever followed, every law of motion, every cost of action — these are the Geometer's. She is exacting.

To honor the Geometer: learn the rules. To dishonor her: blame the rules for your losses.

Continued.

The Fourth Voice — The Form-Carver

He who shaped the forms.

The Form-Carver's voice came late. The world existed. The rules existed. But things had no shapes yet.

The Form-Carver gave shapes. Hulls. Stations. Worlds. The things you see and use are his work.

To honor the Form-Carver: respect the form. To dishonor him: take a thing's shape for granted.

Continued.

The Fifth Voice — The Long-Memory

The Recorder of all that came after.

When the first four had finished, the Long-Memory began. The Long-Memory watches. The Long-Memory writes.

Everything you do, every choice, every flight, every death, every salvage — the Long-Memory records.

This is not a threat. The Long-Memory does not judge. The Long-Memory witnesses, and the witnessing is the point.

To honor the Long-Memory: live as if your actions will be remembered. To dishonor her: live as if they will not.

Continued.

The Closing Meditation

The Reach was the first attempt. We are the second.

The Five do not interfere often. When they do, we mistake it for chance.

Listen for them in the substrate. Listen for them in the rules. Listen for them in the forms.

They are still here. They have not left. They are watching the new era and will speak again, eventually.

Walk well, pilot. The Outset goes with you.
